Toyne Drills 5 3-Pointers in Chargers’ Blowout of Bees

Freshman Vaughn Toyne (Petersburg, Ill./PORTA) knocked down five 3-pointers and finished with a season-high 17 points in the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team’s 89-46 blowout at St. Ambrose JV on Friday night.
Coming off the bench, Toyne went 5 of 8 from beyond the arc and 6 of 12 overall from the field. He also had a pair of steals and pair of assists for the Chargers (12-2), who won for the sixth time in their last seven games.
Freshman forward Cody Baer (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) matched Toyne’s 17 points while hitting 6 of 8 shots from the floor, and sophomore guard Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East) scored 13 on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3 of 4 from long range. Gowan also had four assists and four rebounds.
Freshman forward Jean Luc Wilson (East Moline, Ill./United Township) had nine points and a season-best 12 rebounds as he finished a point away from his second straight double-double. Half of Wilson’s boards came on the offensive end.
Freshman Brock Bower-Preece (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) and sophomore Carter Fayhee (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) also had nine points apiece for Sandburg, which raced to a 48-14 halftime lead. Fayhee added four rebounds and a team-leading six assists, while Bower-Preece had four steals and three assists.
Sophomore James Jones (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) had eight points, six rebounds, four assists and a team-high five of the Chargers’ 18 steals on the night.
Sandburg shot 50.7 percent (35 of 69) for the contest and hit 12 of its 29 3-point attempts. The 43-point margin of victory was the Chargers’ biggest blowout of the season.
